Dependent Sources let you specify mathematical expressions for voltage and current sources. These expressions can reference other elements allowing you to solve some of those annying homework problems and simulate complex models.

Subcircuits allow you to modularize your designs and create custom elements. (Combined with the dependent sources, this is a very powerful new feature.)

Custom Scope Tracks allow you to perform and plot math on different signals in the circuit.

Scope Triggers make it easier to analyze high-frequncy or frequency-varying signals.

I am very excited for these new features as they greatly extend the power of this app. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

This is the first time the app is running on a non iOS device, and I think you'll agree it's never looked better.

Running on the Mac, iCircuit is given access to a huge CPU and a lot more memory, this means that editing is a faster and smoother experience than ever before. Also, some iOS restrictions have been lifted: circuits can be larger, and there is no restriction on the simulator bandwidth.

I am very pleased that this is out as the 2011 school year is beginning, I wish all students out there the best of luck.

I hope you enjoy creating and playing with circuits on your Macs as much as I do!

You just connect some DC voltage and they started spinning - how can you not love that simplicity?

I and a bunch of others have been wanting DC Motors in iCircuit for a while, and now we have them!

There are 8 parameters that control how the DC motor behaves.

The first three are the most basic. You can easily find these values for any motor you have:

Nominal Voltage - Most motors are rated at a specific DC voltage.

Free Running RPM - The speed of the motor when nothing is attached to it.

Free Running Current - The current drawn by the motor at its free running speed.

The next most important is:

Stall Current - This is the amount of current drawn by the motor when it is no longer able to spin. This is used to calculate the electrical resistance of the motor.

The remaining parameters fine tune that model:

Stall Torque - The maximum torque the motor is able to produce while it is being forced to stop. Torque's SI unit is Nm (Newton meters) but iCircuit asks you to enter oz in (ounce force inches). My apologies non-US users for this.

Inductance - This is used to model the intrinsic inductance of the motor.

Inertia - This is the inertia of the rotor of the motor and is specified in units of Nm/s^2.

The DC Motor will be released with iCircuit 1.3.

Relays, finally

Frank A.

The number of switches in the relay (up to 16)

The type: Normally-open, Normally-closed, Double-throw

Nominal coil voltage, resistance, and inductance

The on and off resistances of the switches

iPad can go almost anywhere with your employees. And with powerful apps, iPad can transform a traditional paper-based workflow to improve the way employees record and track vital business information. From operations managers to surveyors, logistics supervisors to technicians, iPad can help workers log, process and share information. Sorry, clipboards.

Speaking of things EE, the developers of iCircuit ($9.99, four stars), a respected analog and digital circuit simulator and analyzer, refer to it as the "the premier iPad and iPhone app for designing and experimenting with circuits." We have no reason to doubt them — and it's pretty damn good-looking, as well.

Thanks The Register!

iCircuit v1.1 has been accepted!

Frank A.

Two finger dragging to replace the Pin

The Pin was an experiment in UIs to help you manage editing the circuit and panning around with just one finger. But that experiment has caused a lot of frustration in you the users. No more! iCircuit now uses 2 finger panning so you can quickly toggle between editing and panning using just your hands. This is only available on iPads and iOS 4 devices and can also be disabled if you love the Pin.

Non real-time simulations

The circuit is still "always on" but now you can control the bandwidth of the fixed time step simulator to guarantee accurate results.

555 Timer, Potentiometers, and Text Labels

Thanks to your feedback (support@kruegersystems.com), two new elements have been added. The 555 should be great fun for students.

External display (VGA) output on the iPad

Now you can hook the device up to external monitors, TVs, or projectors to share your circuits with an audience.

RMS, Peak-to-peak, and Frequency now displayed in the scope

5 new examples thanks to Mike Acton

A dedicated user was kind enough to donate a bunch of circuits to making the Examples folder even more interesting.

Tips on how to use the app can now be accessed form the Home screen

This is a large app with a lot of features. Tips are now here to speed up the learning process. You can also access these tips at http://tips.icircuitapp.com

Bugs Fixed

iOS 3.1 crashes and bugs have been fixed

There were a variety of errors encountered by users when using iCircuit on 3.1 devices, these have all been fixed.

Better bounds checking on inputs (circuit size for instance) to prevent crashes

Failing circuits no longer cause the app to fail to launch

Send feedback button has been fixed on iPhones

Performance improvements

I gave the app a quick spin on the iPad, and it definitely shows a lot of potential. The simulator had a tendency to lag a bit behind my realtime changes to the schematic, and the UI took some getting used to, but for $10 it sure beats the mobile simulator competition (which is pretty much nonexistent, to my knowledge).

In any case - a handy tool to have around when away from the lab. As the developer notes, the software is rather CPU-intensive so newer devices are recommended (iPhone 3GS or later)
